- Ant lions start life as small insect larvae that make conical depressions in the ground, at the bottom of which they bury themselves. When an ant wanders over the edge it can’t get back up the slippery slope and is caught by the ant-lion. If the ant tries to climb back up it has sand fired at it from the jaws of this predacious larvae, hence it’s name. The adult ant-lion in some respects resembles a dragonfly though the two are not related.
